Omega In-Line Moisture Measurement System & Data Analysis

Moisture measurement, detection, and data analysis for primary and secondary wood products manufacturers.

Let's Discuss What the Omega Can Do For You

About the Omega In-Line Moisture Measurement System and Data Analysis Software

Whether your company is a primary lumber mill or a secondary wood products operation, with or without dry kilns, the Omega In-Line Moisture Measurement System should be your most important moisture measurement and analysis tool.

Whether it is installed upstream or downstream of your planing or moulding operation, a sideways or end-to-end configuration, the benefits of having an Omega system are the same:

  • Keeping moisture problems out of your mill
  • Improving your kiln drying, your grade recovery, and your bottom line by minimizing moisture-related degrade, excessive drying energy costs, wet claims, and overall moisture quality control issues

Omega, Wagner’s latest generation of moisture measurement systems, continues our legacy of providing comprehensive and robust moisture measurement and data analysis tools that are so critical now for today’s modern wood products mills.

Specially designed for the lumber mill or wood products manufacturing environment, Omega and its optional data collection and analysis software is an invaluable tool for improving your kiln drying or overall moisture quality control.

A Closer Look at the Wagner Omega System

The Omega system comes in two basic configurations:

  • Sideways (transverse)
  • End-to-end (lengthwise)

Sideways Configuration

Up to eight sensors can be installed between the chain races.

Boards pass over these sensors at a high rate of speed, and multiple moisture content (MC) readings from each sensor are taken on every piece of lumber. Those that have an out-of-spec (too wet or too dry) MC can activate outputs in the Omega system’s main console to trigger spray-marking devices or your dropout gate.

End-to-End Configuration

Most often installed on the outfeed side of high-speed planers or moulders, an Omega system with an end-to-end sensor scans your lumber, flooring, or wood components at over 300 measurements per second. End-to-end measurement is preferable when, for example, there is a need to identify wet pockets along the length of lumber that will be sold to laminated beam manufacturers. It will also allow the identification and trimming out of wet areas within strip flooring.

Moisture Data Collection and Analysis

Whether you are a high-production lumber mill interested in improving your kiln drying QC or a door/window, wood flooring, or cabinet manufacturer, or other remanufacturing or secondary wood products operation with the need for tight moisture QC…

“You can’t know where to go until you know where you are.”

Omega’s optional data collection and analysis software, gathering moisture data from every measured board, offers you a comprehensive tool to help pin down kiln drying or moisture-related manufacturing problems and can assist in the identification of lumber suppliers that are not meeting your moisture specifications.

For in-depth kiln analysis, primary mills are able to map packages in the kiln and determine hot or cold spots based on moisture data from the planer mill. Moisture data by product is also available.

For the secondary manufacturer, you are able to analyze your key lumber suppliers and, if necessary, help them provide lumber that better meets your moisture criteria.

Omega: Designed to Be Durable in a Very Challenging Environment

FAQs

1. Who should use an In-Line Moisture Measurement System?
An In-Line Moisture Measurement System is for any organization that has a large volume of wood that is processed on/through a production line.

2. What are the advantages of having an In-Line Moisture Measurement System?
In-line systems can measure each piece of wood in large batches without a human needing to take time to be involved in the measurement of each piece of wood saving significant time.

An In-Line system can ensure that every piece of wood has proper moisture levels before it is shipped or used in a product. These systems help operations greatly enhance the quality of products.

In-Line systems are also used to gather data on the moisture content of each batch of wood. This can be extremely helpful for operations that dry wood. Data is used to troubleshoot kilns and maximize the value of the wood being dried in the kilns.

Also, organizations that purchase wood can confirm that they are receiving wood in the moisture range as specified in the purchase contract.

3. What types of systems are available?
Lineal systems: wood moves through the sensor lineally. These are sometimes called End-to-End systems.

Transverse systems: wood moves sideways over a series of sensors. These are sometimes called Sideways systems.

4. How do I choose which type of In-Line system I should purchase?
Choosing the best system depends upon the operation using the In-Line system and the goals for the use of the system. We recommend that a person who is considering the purchase of an In-Line system call Wagner Meters and talk through the options with an Application Specialist. An experienced Application Specialist can review the application and help to maximize the value of the system in each operation.

5. How do I get a price of an in-line system?
Once it has been determined what type of system will provide the most value for an operation, a quote can be provided.

6. Who does the installation of an in-line system?
Wagner Meters provides complete instructions for installation so that each operation can install a system. Wagner Meters also provides phone and email support in case there are questions during installation.

7. What is an In-Line system startup?

After a system has been successfully installed by an organization, Wagner Meters sends a person to the location to inspect the installation, help with calibration, and train the personnel that will be operating the system. The startup is required for the warranty to be valid and is included in the price of the In-Line system.

8. How do my personnel get trained on the usage of the In-Line System?
Initial training is done at startup. Ongoing phone and email support is provided to system owners. If the operation requires a service/training person onsite, they can request a “service call” from Wagner Meters.

9. Do I need to purchase phone support for my In-Line system?
Phone support is provided to operations that own an In-Line system from Wagner Meters as part of the purchase price.

10. What type of warranty is offered on an In-Line System?
The warranty is for one year for parts and labor to remedy a manufacturing problem.

11. What if I need someone from the factory on-site to service my system?
Wagner Meters has a team of trained technicians ready to provide a service call to customers that might need them. If an operation wants onsite service, travel time and costs will need to be paid.
